3 Days in Berchtesgaden National Park – Day 1

As i was telling you in our previous post 3 Days in Berchtesgaden National Park , the first day was meant  for  accommodation with the area.

First we got to the hotel, located in a very restful side of Bechtesgaden- Bischofswiesen. Our hotel was not really a hotel, but a “Gasthaus”- a German style inn   . This type of accommodation is very common in Germany and Austria. For those interested the name of the Gasthaus is GÄSTEHAUS MARCHLER It looks a bit isolated in the mountains, but if you have a car, the location is not a problem . However the location is not that  far away from civilization, because in just a few minutes’ drive you can reach Königssee, Ramsau, Salzburg and the spa-town Bad Reichenhall. The Gasthaus looked very nice on the outside and inside, with many traditional wood decorations and mural paintings.  We got to meet the owners, who also lived inside the Gasthaus and  received a room  . Unfortunately the inn did not have a restaurant, so that meant we had to search for another place for lunch and dinner (the breakfast was served there). This is a picture of GÄSTEHAUS MARCHLER.

We left our suitcases there and quickly left towards Königssee. On the road we stopped for a few  pictures.

We got then to Königssee, parked the car beside the lake and went to see what we could do there. Near the parking lot we found many small shops with food and souvenirs. We had two possibilities: take a boat till St. Bartholomew’s church (a symbol of this area found on almost all postcards) or do a small hiking trail called “Malerwinkel Rundweg”. Because it was only our first day there and the weather was not that good we decided to leave St. Bartholomew for another day.

“Malerwinkel Rundweg” was a 1-2 hours hiking road, but  the effort is worth it. We saw Königssee  from above and St. Bartholomew’s church from far away.Even though it was winter, only small parts of the road were covered in snow. The trail  lead us through the woods and back to the parking lot. We then went back to our inn , unpacked and had dinner. We only had with us food for 1 day , so the 2 next days we tried the local restaurants.

After a few hours we went to see Salzburg, located at just 15 mins from our hotel. What i forgot to tell you in my previous post is that our trip to Berchtesgaden took place around Christmas. That is why in Salzburg we could admire the traditional Christmas Market. We walked for a few hours among the stands with Christmas decorations and food and went back to the hotel.

The first night at GÄSTEHAUS MARCHLER  was a bit too cold for me. The heat was working, but it wasn’t hot enough. Lucky for me i found an extra blanket.

For the second day we planned to see St. Bartholomew church and do another hiking trail.
